Be aware of Fraudulent Cashier's Checks
Steuben Trust Company wants to help you keep your bank accounts safe and secure. There are many examples of fraud that are occurring each and every day at all financial institutions. For instance, fraud involving the use of cashier's checks has grown over the past few years.
This type of fraud can occur as a result of on-line solicitations (i.e. mystery shopper, work from home, etc.) or the receipt of an unsolicited cashier's check from someone. In almost all cases, these turn out to be fraudulent checks. One typical scam is to ask you to deposit the cashier's check you have received and at some point shortly thereafter, return a portion of the money back to the sender or another party either by wire transfer, Western Union or MoneyGram. The cashier's check will be returned to your bank as a fraudulent item, and you would suffer a loss for any money you had sent out.
Use caution and common sense when dealing with these situations.
